Decorating your home is exciting but some people can also find it a little intimidating. To help keep you on the right path, here are four common interior design mistakes to avoid:
1. Furniture that doesn't fit: Choose furniture and wall art carefully. If the piece(s) you select are too large or too small they can drastically and often negatively effect the look and feel of a room. Select the perfect furniture by always bringing the measurements of your room with you when shopping and ask your salesperson to help you mock up the room using a
space planner, so you can see exactly how items will fit with your home before they arrive.
2. Hanging everything at the same height: Many people make the mistake of hanging every piece of wall art and mirror in their home at the same height. To best utilize your wall space, don't be afraid to vary the heights of your wall art and mirrors. Keep in mind that variations don't need to be drastic to make a statement. Slight changes in height will tie your wall decor into the overall design of the room and create interesting
focal points throughout your home.
3. Letting collectibles dominate the room: The old saying, "less is sometimes more" is key when it comes to displaying collectibles. While it's easy to get swept up in adorning every surface in your room with them, you should really try to display only a few at a time. This will keep your space from looking cluttered, but still allows it to feel
personal. Try rotating pieces every few months to reinvent your space.
4. Stray area rugs: Area rugs are a wonderful way to tie a room together or inject it with a splash of colour. However, when rugs aren't integrated into the overall design of the space and are left to float in the center of the room, they can be distracting and leave the room feeling uncoordinated.
Not sure how to restructure your room to better incorporate your rug? You can always take a quick photo and ask a local home decor specialist, like any member of The Upper Room sales team, to make a few
recommendations.
