6 Easy Tips: Creating the Classic Man’s Room

Today’s men and women may not always have competing tastes, but when it comes to home décor, undoubtedly each partner will want to carve out a space that distinctly reflects their individual personality and style.

The classic man’s room is usually an area where guys can sprawl across the furniture, have a drink and enjoy the game. Whether the focal point of the room is a bar or large screen television and gaming console, recreating the feel of the classic man’s room is easy.  Use these easy-to-follow design tips and we promise you’ll be relaxing in no time:

Work in rich, solid tones – Navy, burgundy, brown and deep green colours are all excellent choices and will help define the space. If you are looking to work in patterns, remember that they should be understated.

Work with wood detailing – Many dark woods have a distinctly masculine feel. While some homes are fortunate enough to have wooden floors or accents worked into the architecture of the room, many men will have to find ways to incorporate wood detailing themselves.  An easy way to do this is to select furniture that has thick wooden feet or use wooden paneling as a partial wall covering.

Function over fashion – When accenting a guy’s room, “function over fashion” should be your motto.  If an item does not serve a distinct purpose it probably doesn’t belong. For example, table tops should be kept clear for drinks and food and toss pillows are almost always out of the question. If you do decide to display collectibles, designate an area for them, such as a display cabinet or shelf.

Trophies, diplomas and certificates – “Function over fashion” does not apply here; these items should be displayed. Be proud of your achievements and don’t be afraid to show them off.

Make sure you can put your feet up – This is very important when it comes to selecting the perfect furniture for your space. Comfortable, large furniture pieces are ideal, as they will allow you to relax and sprawl. Think leather recliners and supple sofas.

Don’t be shy about electronics – Monstrous televisions, thunderous stereo systems and a collection of computers and gaming consoles are all great focal points in a man’s room.
