Clean a Polypropylene Area Rug in 6 Simple Steps

A favorite among pet owners and high traffic households, synthetic tweed, polypropylene area rugs are known for their durability and resistance to staining. But, in the event that your toddler drops their juice or your dog has an accident, you’ll need to be prepared.

Follow these six steps to extend the life of your polypropylene rug and put your mind at ease:

  • Vacuum your rug regularly, but ensure that you are using a suction-only attachment. Beater bars or any attachment with a rotating nozzle can potentially damage the foundation of your rug, shortening its life;
  • Gently absorb spills as soon as they occur using a clean cloth or paper towel;
  • Remove any lingering stains using a mixture of three parts warm water to one part mild laundry detergent. Liquid detergent is recommended;
  • Gently massage mixture over stain until it has been removed;
  • Blot the newly cleaned area with a clean, slightly dampened cloth to removed any excess detergent and allow area to air-dry;
  • Only spot washing is recommended. Never attempt to clean an entire polypropylene rug yourself. For heavily soiled fabric items consult a company that provides a professional cleaning service.
